Creating the Fortress

I first created the Fortress of the Unforgiven in the year 2000 as a simple repository of holo-vid images of the battle brothers belonging to the Unforgiven spacemarine chapters. In particular it was more for the convenience of being able to upload images of my own army and work-in-progress so that I could share these with fellow hobbyists at the B+C. Version 3.0 of the Wh40K game had been around for a couple of years by this time and I had realised that there were many small inconsistencies in the rules relating to the Dark Angels Chapter. It was then that iI took the crucial step of designing my own sub set of rules that would allow the Dark Angels chapter to be played in the spirit of their backgroun, and Project Codex Unforgiven was borne.

In March 2001 I launched the first proper version of the Fortress of the Unforgiven site, with the Codex Unforgiven as the mainstay of that site. Site design and navigation were all extremely basic and loading times were horrendously long as I battled to understand the basics of web publishing. Gradually the fortress expanded to the extent that I relaunched version 2.0 in October 2001, having completetly re-designed the layout, created my own unique sets of icons and navigation aids. I then also began inviting hobbyists, gamers, tacticians writers and artists to contribute to the site resulting in the massive structure that you now stand within. In January 2005 I began once again to re do the Fortress while maintainng the old layout. It was a mammoth task, one which was done while making the Dark Angel community believe in the progressive demise of the site. The third version was finally rerleased to the public in October 2005.

Aims and concepts of this site

The main purpose behind the this site is to encourage the hobby and game of warhammer 40,000 in all its forms. It is specifically focussed at the Dark Angels Spacemarine chapter and its successor chapters. The site is aimed at supporting and helping fellow Dark Angels by providing a single site which brings together everything relevant to the hobby, from back ground and history to battlefield tactics and modelling advice. Every chamber on this fortress is related in someway to the Dark Angels and the unforgiven

One of my major aims was to provide a place that would encourage budding writers, modellers and gamers to publicise their original works. I have travelled widely in the warp searching for such latent talent. The unique forum dedicated to spacemarine called the "Bolter and Chainsword" must take a major part of the credit by providing a forum where Dark Angels are able to gather. Keeping with such philosophy, the vast majority of the work presented here, are contributions from fanatical and talented Dark Angel fans.

Introduction to the Fortress of the Unforgiven

How I got involved

I first stumbled upon the world of Warhammer 40,000 in 1997 by accident while working in Taunton, Somerset, UK. While attempting to buy a present for a family friend whom i knew loved the game. The hobby shop owner, who by coincidence also originated from my home town of Melbourne Australia, explained the gaming system and back ground as well as its older sibling Warhammer Fantasy Battles. As I read the Codex: Angels of Death, ddetailing the Dark Angels Chapter, the depth and character of the WH40K universe immediately grabbed me. The rest is history as I delved deeper in to the hobby replacing my interest in modelling historical combat aircraft and armoured vehicles.

On my return to Australia in 1998 I discovered the huge world of WH40K related websites and chat boards which allowed me to share ideas and discuss strategies as well ask acquire advice instantaneously from across the world. As I then began to photograph my first attempts at modelling my own successor chapter I realised the need for access to the web. Having virtually no programming skills or knowledge of web site creation, I first was at first helped by a number of other webmasters who hosted my images on their site.

I then discovered the "Bolter and Chainsword" chat board, affectionately known to all as the B+C. Encouraged by the experienced gamers and web masters there I took my first tentative steps in creating a basic web site on Homestead.
